일상의 복잡다단함을 벗어나 다음으로 나아가기 위한 비움과 수련의 인재개발원은 그것을 대하는 사람의 마음가짐에 있어서 사찰과 서원이 가지는 위상과 비슷한 점이 있다. 자연과 어우러지는 공간속에서 복잡함을 잊고, 머리를 비우고, 다시 자신에게 필요한 지혜와 창의 그리고 지식을 채워가는 것은 두 공간이 방문객에게 제공하는 공통의 자산이다. 이러한 해석에서 참고한 장소는 경북 안동의 봉정사와 대구시의 도동서원이다. 개별건물들이 만들어내는 중정들은 위치하는 건물들의 성격에 따라 다른 풍경과 에너지를 만들어낸다. 어두운색의 지붕들은 그 통일성으로 개별건물들과 공간들을 차분하게 눌러주며, 지형의 변화에 맞춰 내려앉은 건물은 자연과 함께 어우러져 편안하고 지속가능한 조화를 만들어낸다. 이러한 봉정사와 도동서원의 공간적 특성은 경북인재개발원에 현대적으로 재해석되어 경북의 인재들을 맞이하게 된다.

Gyeongsangbuk-Do Human Resource Development Institute has a similar topology with temple or ‘Seowon’ – Korean traditional education place – in terms of visitors’ objectives. They visit such place to liberate from their everyday hustle and bustle, and to internally achieve such essence to advance to the next chapter. Both temple or ‘Seowon’ provide opportunity to cleanse visitors’ minds and acquire wisdom, creativity and knowledge from the environment of nature for the ones who visit. Appropriate references would be the Temple of Bongjeon at the city of Andong, and Dodong ‘Seowon’ within the city of Daegu. Respective architectures encounter a courtyard – different types and programs of each architecture present dynamic energy and sceneries with the courtyard. Dark colored roofs offer calm unity to respective architectures and spaces. Merged architectures into the grade create perpetual harmony with its surrounding nature. Such spatial attributes of above mentioned temple and ‘Seowon’ are reinterpreted into the design of Human Resource Development Institute to welcome the future and present talented people of Gyeongsangbuk-Do.
